How to Upgrade Your Makeup for Family Photos

Beauty Family Photo Styling Makeup Photo Styling

Pictured above is my "family photo" makeup right after applying.  I share what it looks like 6+ hours later at the end of this post.

A few weeks ago, I was asked to work with a few brands to shoot some content.  As I was getting ready for the shoot, I realized the makeup I was doing was an "upgrade" to my everyday makeup, the same upgrade I'd make if we were getting our family pictures done.  I always want to look like ME in these photos, but it's nice to step things up a notch or two from my everyday look.

I took a video while doing my makeup that morning and recorded it for the ORM Private Style Group (anyone that has previously purchased an ORM Style Capsule is invited to join.  If you're interested in joining the group, here are the currently available style capsules).  In addition to the video, I also made a list of the products I used with links to each product. Those are listed for you below!

Prep Products:

Unseen Sunscreen - SPF 40 (great  SPF to use under make-up - no white cast)

Lumify Eye Drops - the only kind of eye drop that truly takes the red out of my eyes.

Aquaphor - used on my lips before I put on anything else.  I use this once a day and haven't used chapstick in years!

Face and Brow Products/Tools:

Ilia Concealer - I use the color Suma SC1.5 under my eyes and on any large sunspots, melasma or blemish marks.

Eco Tools Wonder Color Complextion Foundation Brush - used to blend out the concealer - under $10!

Kosas Brow Pop Pencil - I use shade neutral medium brown - very light application and I use the spoolie end to blend out the little that I do apply.

Eco Tools Eye Shadow Brush Duo Set - both of these brushes are double sided, so it's like getting 4 brushes. I use this set to highlight under my brows and apply my eyeshadow later in the video.  This one set should get you all you need to get started and is also under $10.

Jones Road EyeShadow in the shade Chic - used under my brows. Feel free to sub any creamy ivory shadow that has no glitter or shimmer to it for the same effect.

Eye Products:

Kaja Beauty Bento Eyeshadow Trio - in the video I used the set called chocolate dahlia.  That color grouping has been discontinued.  A similar set/color trio would be "neutral moment" - which is the example I've linked above.

E.L.F. Need it Nude Eye Shadow Palette - this is the closest product to the one I used in the video. The palette in the video is called the "brow palette" and was discontinued years ago (it has just lasted me this long!). I've found E.L.F. brand shadows to work great with sensitive eyes - I've never had an issue using this brand. The creamy ivory in the linked palette could work as the under brow product if you'd like (saving you from getting 2 things and of course, saving you $$$!)

Clinique Sculptionary Cheek Contouring Palette - using the palette color "defining nudes" in the video. I use the lighter color to blend out from the inside corner of my eye to my mid-lid area and up to my brow bone.  On "normal" makeup days, I use this one palette for a quick dusting of bronzer and highlighter - which is why I use this palette in my family photo makeup. You could use any light shimmer shadow you'd like for this step - just try to keep it neutral so it doesn't fight your skin tone.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Up to 24HR Longwear Cream Eye Shadow - in the shade High Roller applied to most of my lower lid with my finger tip (its creamy).

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color - in the shade intense moonlight. Applied from the inner corner of my lid to the mid-point by dabbing on and then blending in to the middle.

Jones Road - The Best Pencil Clean Eyeliner - in the color brown. I use the pencil very lightly to line the top of my eyelid along the lash line.  Then I use the liner brush on the Eco Tools duo set with my darkest brown shadow from any of my palettes to blend the pencil eyeliner in and gently line my lower lash line (powder only).

L'oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara - in the color Blackest Black (non-waterproof). I do 2 coats per eye.

Cheek and Face Products:

Kosas Bronzer Sample Card used in the video as well as the Full Size Kosas Bronzer - I use the color Golden Bronze in the video to sculpt under my cheek bones and towards the end of the video, I use the Light Soft Bronze color to blend into my hairline and along my jaw line.

Blush and Highlighter Powder Sample was used in the video - the full size set can be found here.  I use the Warm Peach Duo color in the video and apply it to the tops of my cheek bones.

Blush and Highlighter Palette - Cream Sample was used in the video - the full size Cream Blush and Highlighter Palette can be found here.  I use the Velvet Melon set directly on my cheek bones.

Then I blend out all 3 above products using the blush brush from this set (it's a steal for less than $10 and the 5 amazing brushes included in the set!)

My entire face is then dusted/blended with the Kosas Comfy Set Setting Powder - I use the shade sheer medium applied with the Eco Tools Full Powder Brush.

Lip Products:

Kosas Weightless Lipstick in the color Phoenix (the sample set mentioned in the video is no longer available, only the full size lipsticks are).  This is very different than what I use in my everyday 5 minute makeup - but I'll go over that in a future blog post!

Pictured below is my makeup from the end of the day - 6+ hours later!

I hope that me sharing the products I use helps you think about how to "up" your makeup game for any special events or pictures you have without changing your overall look TOO much!  That's the goal around here anyway!

XoXo,
~ORM
